Artist: Christopher SquierTitle: Tanya Don’t Cry (from Monstratsiya series)Date made: 2018Location Purchased: gifted to me upon Chris’s move out of SFPrice: Year acquired: 2019Dimensions: 18.5” x 12”Media: Frosted GlassArtist Statement: Reappropriating absurdist Russian protest signs known as monstratsiya (-monstrations), the works call to loophole behaviors used to circumnavigate legal complications where illegibility and ‘invisibility’ are rendered as effective as direct action. Here, the act of archiving monstratsiya protest signs serves to document these ephemeral gestures and give them permanent form. The collection of monstrations includes: “Get me out of here,” “Porridge is evil,” “What are your plans for eternity,” “Raccoons are people too,” “We’ve had enough borscht,” and “The sun is your enemy.”Notes: When Chris gave this to me he added a note saying “P.S. the Tanya Don’t Cry piece cracks me up, imagining it with your name misspelled. Put it up to make me happy.”

*not the image of the work i haveArtist: Christopher SquierTitle: Point Bonita LighthouseDate made: 2019Location Purchased: gifted to me upon Chris’s move out of sfPrice: freeYear acquired: 2020Dimensions: 5ft x 8ftMedia: Dye Sublimation Print on FabricNotes: created during Chris’ time at the headlands.Artist Statement: Through sculpture, my work examines the history of optical devices to investigate the role of light in contemporary visual culture. Looking to Napoleonic France, where the modern lighthouse lens was invented, as well as various moments in the history of scientific photography, my projects play with luminescence and transparency to position vision, optics, and perception as historically-altered experiences. While at Headlands, I will conduct research into these themes (vision and perception), thinking perhaps about what the materiality of light feels like, how to exist within a theater of optics, or what the speech patterns of fireworks might be. I will make spine pads and pith bandages to ward off the sun and pay visits to the nearby Point Bonita beacon to observe the fresnel lens. And by the end of my time, I hope to see my work differently than I did at the beginning.

Artist: Chuck PotterTitle: Adrift on the Desert BreathDate made: 2020Location Purchased: MarinMOCA 2022 art auction fundraiser called ArtFWRD Price: $400 (market value $1,200)Year acquired: 2022Dimensions: 30 x 24 x 1.5 inchesMedia: Custom plasters and mixed media on canvasNotes: Description from auction site-Utilizing customized plaster mixes and other natural materials, Chuck Potter (b. 1958) creates abstract, textual responses to nature. He spontaneously embeds plaster with personal items like feathers, jute, and paper. Adrift on the Desert Breath (2020) is part of a series of works representing nature as seen from the distance of a moving car or plane. He tries to capture the haptic qualities of the landscape, the softness of rose petals or the hardness of rocks, to emphasize how, in our increasingly tech-oriented world, our perception of the natural world has changed. Potter wants each viewer to participate in his work, making visual discoveries of their own.Potter, a native of California, is an artist, educator, and community advocate based in the Bay Area. His work has been widely exhibited in local solo and group exhibitions and was recently included in Artists of the Bay Area, a book by Jen Tough. His work is in the public collection of the Sutter Solano Medical Center, Vallejo. He earned a MA from the John F. Kennedy University and a BS from the University of California, Hayward.
Artist: Joe Ferriso Title: River Beach IIIDate made: 2022Location Purchased: MarinMOCA 2022 art auction fundraiser called ArtFWDPrice: $700 (market value $1,250)Year acquired: 2022Dimensions: 19 x 15 x 1 ¼ inchesMedia: Acrylic on framed panelNotes: description from auction site- Working in multiple mediums and disciplines, Joe Ferriso paints to excite and connect people. In recent paintings like River Beach III (2022), he responds to the angular architectural forms of The Sea Ranch community, where he currently lives. Through the use of vibrant color, he transforms the subdued natural landscape into a dynamic painted statement.Ferriso grew up in Long Island, New York, and studied art at The Cooper Union School of Art, New York. He moved to the Bay Area in 2009 and co-founded an experimental furniture studio, Anzfer Farms. In 2018, he received an MFA from Stanford University. In 2020, he moved with his wife, baby, and dog to The Sea Ranch.
Artist: Cecily O’ConnorTitle: BirdlineDate made: 2021Location Purchased: MarinMOCA 2022 art auction fundraiser called ArtFWDPrice: $350 (market value $600)Year acquired: 2022Dimensions: 16 x 16 x 1 ½ inchesMedia: Oil, coldwax on wood panelNotes: description from auction site- Cecily O’Connor is a mixed-media painter. She was inspired to create Birdline (2021) through her interest in bird imagery, cave paintings, and archaeological objects—time-worn, textured, and unearthed from long ago. O’Connor used a variety of materials and tools to achieve the work's distinctive, textural surface—oil, cold wax, and pencil and etching instruments. The various layers of paint come together to create a unique monochromatic color. Each line and mark conveys a different emotion. The granddaughter of John Stanton, the well-known Bay-Area painter, O’Connor has always wanted to pursue an artistic career, but because fortune has a way of sending one on a different course than planned, she started to make art later in life. O’Connor received an AA in art from College of Marin and a BA in studio art from Sonoma State University, where she studied under Jay DeFeo. She has exhibited her work at juried shows, winning several awards. Her work is in a number of private collections.

Artist: Amy NathanTitle: Date made: 2022Location Purchased: Southern Exposure Monster Drawing RallyPrice: $100Year acquired: 2022Dimensions: Media: Notes: description from the SOEX site- Amy Nathan is an artist working in sculpture, painting and installation; her practice asks questions about how meaning can be expressed through visual languages. Nathan’s work is guided by ideas such as the gendered nature of politics and power, classical mythology and contemporary literature and the body’s visceral reaction to its environment. Her work has been exhibited at CULT Aimee Friberg Exhibitions, the Headlands Center for the Arts, /room/, Saint Joseph’s Arts Society, AORA London, Traywick Contemporary, Facebook, and the International Sculpture Center.

Artist: Natasha LoewyTitle: Date made: 2022Location Purchased: Southern Exposure Monster Drawing RallyPrice: $100Year acquired: 2022Dimensions: Media: Notes: description from the SOEX site- Natasha Loewy (she/her) lives and works in Oakland, CA. She received a BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute in 2008, a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Art from Mills College in 2012, and an MFA in Art Practice from San Francisco State University in 2022. Drawing from personal accounts of family trauma and a shared socio-political climate, she creates works that use tension and fragility to explore the relationships between anxiety, humor, and healing. She has taught art in elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as within youth art programs throughout the Bay Area. She is one of three members of MUZ, a Bay Area based art collective focused on a collaborative studio and curatorial practice.
